Trade Review #7-Wolverine: Old Man Logan (Marvel)

Superheroes have either discovered the fountain of youth, or they are forever living in "Groundhog Day."  Why?  They never age. Unless we're dealing with some sort of time traveling-multiversal exploring-commonly used trope nonsense, they are forever the same age. Until now in:

Wolverine: Old Man Logan (Marvel)
By: Mark Millar, Steve McNiven

We meet Logan on his family's farm in Sacramento, Hulkland.  Times for the former badass are quite financially rough, where we've learned that he is unable to make this month's rent.  While other folks around him have had financial troubles, Logan feels like the Hulk family may come to collect their fee, or give him a beating.  When three Hulkings arrive, instead of giving them all a righteous beating, he fights one and then decides to take his lumps.  The beating gives him a two week extension to pay things off, and now he needs to discover an out.  Lucky enough for him, Hawkeye shows up and offers Logan a business proposition, help him navigate across the country to make a delivery for the fee of $500, which is more than enough to make Rent.

As the two men drive cross country in the spider-car they get into all sorts of problems, and in each situation which takes a turn to violence, Logan refuses to fight back.  But, what Hawkeye cannot understand is why.  Why would Logan refuse to fight back with all he is capable of.  However, Logan won't say for quite some time.  Until we discover that Logan is responsible for the death of all of his friends.  He believed he was killing a broad gallery of rogues, but it was all a ruse established by Mysterio.  It was on that day, Logan decided to retire from the superhero life.

When Logan and Hawkeye make it to their destination of New Babylon they discovered Hawkeye was bringing super serum to a man/group called Tobias who was seeking out to create the next wave of the Avengers. However, it was a sting operation organized by SHIELD (who is now evil....) and once Hawkeye is slain, Logan has no choice but to fight back.  He engages in a battle with the President (old-man Red Skull?) who has a collection of old Avengers gear in his office.  I'l just say that this whole section is GLORIOUS!!!!! The art, the action, everything top to bottom is a quite exquisite near ending to the first collection.

As Logan returns home (in a stolen Iron Man suit) he believes everything will return to normal.  He's got the money to pay off the Hulk family and can be kept alone for quite some time.  However, he learned the Hulklings visited his farm while he was gone and a two week extension meant "until they were bored."  With the death of his family, Logan seeks revenge on any member of the Hulk family he can find, and kills them in glorious panels and spreads and Logan is no more, he has returned to Wolverine.

Conclusion

I never thought I would get into this series.  I knew Old Man Logan existed, and I had seen copies of Old Man Hawkeye at my LCS, I've just passed on by. However, when Jason sent me this in my random box of goodness, I was a little excited, and in reading this book which precedes the Old Man Logan, I'm at least intrigued enough to pick up 1-2 more of the Trades (there are 8 in total including this one).

If you haven't checked this out, and you are any sort of a Wolverine fan, check it out!
