SPP Update--RIP My Stack!

I'm going to put this out there in case I am too tired to write a conclusion...I was a big fan of 95% of everything I picked up either through purchase or FCBW from Source Point Press.  This Michigan publisher has a new fan! My LCS does offer some SPP books, and I had never picked any up, this is clearly a decision I am regretting now, but will rectify it when books begin to circulate whenever things become "normal" again.

Touching Evil #1
By: Dan Dougherty

I think I am in love with this book.  There were so many "what the hell" moments that had me flipping back and forth, I think I've read it 7 times now! The premise is there's a man in a prison who's 90 year's old (but looks 20) who kills whomever he touches, if they are truly evil.  It also looks as if their souls are housed in his mind so he chooses to stay silent (a real Shang Tsung type vibe).  By the end of the book, he has transferred his curse to a new host, and once she's out in the real world, things go crazy.

This book leaves me with a bunch of excited questions for who was the "patient zero" of the curse, how is evil defined, can the curse be contained again?  Can it leave the host's body?

That's the kind of energy you want coming out of a #1, I'll tell you that!  If I instantly need to binge #2-3-4-5-6-7, you've struck something.  I also think the artwork and color is quite nicely done here as well, especially when it comes to revealing the figure of "the ghost."  I'm definitely pulling the trigger and getting the trade now, because this story pushes all of my right buttons!

Hope #1-2
By: Dirk Manning and K. Lynn Smith

We live in a world where those with superpowers (or Ultras) have to register their power with the government....WHAT?

via GIPHY

In the first two issues, we meet "Hope" who is really Julie Lavelle.  Julie is an ultra, but has kept her powers secret from both her husband and daughter.  However, through a tragic event, her abilities are revealed to the public (why did none of those assholes CALL FOR HELP?). Julie now has to figure out what to do, how can she keep her family safe, how can she put the genie back in the bottle?

I really thought this was an interesting take on secret identities, because it's rare that the ID is accidentally exposed through trauma.  We also see Julie struggling not only her child being taken by CPS because she's not registered, but also with who may be both pulling the strings to now manage her (since she's known) or who is hunting her (last panel of book 2, yikes!). The trade was released in January, and I need to get my hands on it, because based on the events of just the first two books alone, this could sustain itself for a long run, which excites me a great deal!

Boxmasters (GN)
By: Garrett Gunn and Saint Yak

In the midst of reading this book, I lovingly looked up at my beautiful wife, stared deeply into her brown eyes and said "I'm reading a fucking book about Billy Bob Thornton traveling through time to save rock and roll."  After she looked at me terrified, I went back to reading.

I still can't believe it.  Someone is traveling through time to destroy rock and roll.  Why?  I'm not going to spoil the ending.  However, in a discovered note, "Boxmasters are the key" so, someone needs to find BBT's band now (this is an actual thing that I didn't now about, and I feel my life has been devoid of joy since they assembled in 2007, and I just hear about it in the year of our lord 2020).

If I were to write ANYTHING else, it would spoil the ending, trust me.  This book was an unexpected joy, and it's something I'll pull from time to time whenever I need a quick fun read!
