Black Cotton #2 (Scout Comics)
Black Cotton #2 begins by giving us a frame-by-frame breakdown of the day that Zion Cotton shot an un-armed white woman who was a robbery suspect (wearing a hoodie).
Again, seeing something like this play out with the flipped dynamic is traumatic, but that is the intent! While all too often white folks can empathize with people of color after officer involved shootings happen, there is something about seeing it that helps push the reader into a further zone of understanding the trauma a community may feel whenever this happens. I've also made the comparison to this book and T.I.'s music video for Warzone (CW: Gun Violence) it has the same kind of jarring effect that should make anyone think about racial dynamics.
I wholeheartedly believe that I am going to love the continuing evolution of Black Cotton for the same reasons I enjoy the movie Bullworth or Body Count's No Lives Matter. Black Cotton like these other fantastic works of media allow for important discussions to happen while juxtaposing or criticizing current social tropes.
The last thing I'll say, is THE ENDING.....OH MY GOD! I definitely didn't see that coming, and I'm glad we only have to wait one month to see how everyone reacts to what went down!
Order it now, if you are afraid your LCS won't have a copy!
