Poser Points #47--The Birds of Prey are in a Nailbiter vs. Reaver

Finally, here comes my second set of reviews from new books this week!  I enjoyed all three of these books for different reasons!  You have a super-heroine team-up, some serial killer horror, and the return of a fantasy favorite!

Birds of Prey #1 (DC Black Label)
By: Brian Azzarello, Emanuela Lupacchino, Ray McCarthy, Trish Mulvhill, and Steve Wands

I thoroughly enjoyed this.  I have not yet seen the film but I do not believe it is relevant to understand what's going on.

In this book we get to see Harley Quinn, Black Canary, the Huntress and Renee Montoya (who is the Question, but I think she was just a plainclothes officer in this one), come together by a matter of chance. While Joker and Harley have split (which I think is one of the big drives of the movie) that is the B plot as the BOP work together to fight a new series of druglords who are all donning some sort of Dia de los Muertos face paint and/or tattoos.  You get to see the formation of the new team in a fairly organic way, where they have to learn to trust each other (especially Harley, since she is fresh out of prison.)

This book was on-point from the team-up, to the detective action, to the interference from the Joker's goons to the explosive artistic punches delivered by the creative team!

I think this was a great read, and I think there is a #2 coming....but I have also seen some news that what we saw in this book is #1 and 2. Either way, if there is more, I'll pick it up.  If not, I'll definitely re-read this again!

Nailbiter Returns #1 (Image)
By: Joshua Williamson, Mike Henderson

I have not read Nailbiter proper (but I fixed that by going to my LCS and picking up the first TPB).

You see a torturing/killing at the beginning of the book, and it is gruesome but brilliant from an art perspective.  Apparently, this is a copycat of what happens in the first book.

I'ma be honest, I didn't get what was going on, but I am now judiciously reading my Nailbiter Trade, and will probably grab more of that run before the next book comes out, because I want more!

Reaver #7-8 (Image)
By: Justin Jordan, Niko Henrichon

Reaver was one of the trades I got in the mail during my LCS during the era of no distribution, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I forgot to pick up 7, but I went back to my LCS on Thursday to right that wrong.  I'm glad that this book focuses on Essen Breaker who is attempting to find a new right path forward in his life and Rekala who is my favorite character from the first book!

Essentially they both arrive in a new town, there is a gang who is working-over that town and are about to traffick some children somewhere.  Rekala and Breaker are working together to take them down!

This book delivers as well as the first arc did, and if you aren't reading it I feel like you could start with 7-8 and easily fill in the back story you need thus far!
