Poser Points #4 (Feb 12)

Here is the first wave of reviews for my favorite day of the week!  New comic book day has been the thing that helps push me through the end of the week, and it is getting me to read more beyond comics! Here are the items that made it to the top of the stack.  These reviews may be shorter than last week, because I have a bunch, so here is wave 1:

Marvels #1 and 2
By: Alex Ross, Jim Krueger, Well-Bee

Book 1 squeaked by me, but I was intrigued at the premise and threw #2 on the pull, and luckily there was a #1 for me to snag.

A disease is ravaging planet earth, and it is either killing all humans or it is forcing them to mutate and gain some degree of powers.  In book 1 we meet David who is a young man enamored with super heroes, and as the remaining members of his family slowly die off or mutate, he believes that his super hero idols (especially Captain America) can help save him.  Book 1 ends with him falling asleep on a truck ride with a mysterious driver.

Book 2 begins with Johnny Blaze himself warding off a horde of mutants outside of NYC saving David, but scaring him off in the process.  We discover throughout the course of book 2 that someone/thing is hunting David, because he may be the last human alive....

What should you do? 1. Definitely buy these singles, they are a great story panning out a "what if" storyline that feels like it will have a big payoff.  2. Love the covers (I'm a sucker for a cardstock book). 3. Stare at the details in the art, I've been through each book twice now and I'm creating some theories....(they're probably wrong, but its fantastic). 3. Right now, I'd say it is trade-worthy, but we'll see how I feel about book 3.  But right now, big fan.

SFSX (Safe Sex) #6 (Image)
By: Tina Horn, Jen Hickman, Steve Wands

This is a book that I continue to be surprised by how much I love it.  Book 6 helps resolve the cliffhanger of if Jones is really part of the party, if she's brainwashed, or if she can be saved...in addition to resolving a lot of the chaos at the Pleasure Center/Dirty mind in the final pages of book 5.  This book does a solid job offering an additional peek behind the curtain of some of the folks working on behalf of the party and exploring some additional power dynamics from some of the individual villainous players.  I think the gag of everyone slipping in the lube (both friend and foe) made me chuckle a bit.  While some of the conflict is resolved, we are still left hanging to see if our protagonists make it out ok, and we'll find out in book 7!

What should you do? 1. Keep buying these singles.  It is a great storyline, and one of the quotes on the back "it is a mature thriller for adults by adults" (Multiversity Comics) is a great way to summarize this.  2.  Check out Tina Horn's playlist for each issue on spotify (I think this is something that all books should have, a soundtrack!).

Batman Pennyworth RIP #1 (DC)
By: James Tynion IV, Peter Thomasi, and art by literally everone

This shit is sad.  You know when the New York Times writes an article that Alfred is dead....my guy ain't comin back.  This book is written from the standpoint of each member of the "bat family" with art from the folks who have been drawing most of those books.  The story focuses on a cathartic release of everyone's best Alfred stories.

What Should You Do? 1. Buy Kleenex, 2. Buy this book, 3. Cry, 4. Repeat

Batman vs Ra's al Ghul #4 (DC)
By: Neal Adams

I enjoyed books 1-3 a lot, and then it felt like months have passed since 3 came out and I picked up 4 today. The art is fantastic, and I love someone who writes, draws, and colors their own work.

The problem is I've read so much since the last book, I cannot remember what in the hell is going on, so my dumb brain is confused....

What should I do? Re-read book 3, and then try again.
What should you do? Buy it and help me fill in the blanks. I'll take another stab at a review by week's end....It's not you Neal Adams....its me

Thor #3 (Marvel)
By: Donny Cates, Nic Klein, Matt Wilson

Another short review.

This is like 30 pages of Thor and Beta Ray Bill kicking each other's asses with Galactus chiming in from time to time.  MORE PLEASE!

Cates, Klein and Wilson continue to kill it.

What Should You Do? Go buy every copy of these books you can find, and figure out why we are all worthy enough to deserve the brilliance of these three folks.

In conclusion.....

Books I loved, throughout with nothing I'm disappointed in.  I have high hopes for the rest of my stack as well.  I'm interested in seeing what everyone else on comic book twitter thinks about this fine fine weekly holiday!
