The best part of my vacation has been getting caught up on any of the reading I've been behind on in terms of physical books, but with my NCBD reads all accounted for (for now!) I'm getting caught up on some of my recent solicits from publishers and kickstarters. I just got done reading the subject of today's view, which tags itself as “What If Friday the 13th jumped into bed with The Boys?” I never thought I'd ask myself that question but now that it's out there, I'm dying to know the answer!
Killer Bad #1 (Kickstarter)
I only got the first 7 pages (which are also physically visible on the kickstarter page now) and all I can say, is that the introduction of the issue matches the zany high-intensity, out-of-nowhere insanity we'd get from any other comic or action cartoon in the 90's. We don't fully know what's going on, we don't really know what the full mission is, but I'll be damned if we're not beating our chest and ready to witness the insanity from go.
All I can really say, is from the x-men references, to a nanite reference (ya'll know I LOVE MY BLOODSHOT) this feels precisely like the comics I fell in love with when I'd hide them from my parents. This is my childhood in 7 pages, and I'm in love.
Burandt says, “I am beyond excited to get this project in readers’ hands. In a way, Jason and I get to relive the era that got us into comics in the first place, the early-to-mid-1990's, which culminated in the formation of Image Comics. And that's where this comes from: Jason and I excitedly talking about the early days of X-Force and Spawn, and how we would make a book that tapped into that raw excitement that put art first, while allowing me to update the writing style with a more modern (dare I say, ‘postmodern,’) take.
“The result of that brainstorm is this superhero meets slasher movie pastiche where handsome and beautiful superheros are getting murdered in the goriest, splatterpunk ways imaginable. Jason had all these ridiculous names and character designs in his back pocket already, and I had the memory of an outline of my very first attempt at writing comics (which was actually in the 90's).
“So for both of us, we have this intense thrill of finally getting to tell a story that's been festering in our deranged brains for a long time, both independently of each other, and then as collaborators. It's superheroes. It's horror. It's Killer Bad.”
Dare I mention how insanely affordable backing this is? For just $3 you can get the digital issue, for $10 you can get the physical, digital (and 3 more rewards), and as you go up tier by tier you easily do get your bang for your buck! This project launched on August 2nd, and at the time this was written, its almost 30% to its goal (with 26 days to go). I really hope this project makes it, and maybe when I get back into the swing of interviewing folks on my youtube channel, I can hook up with the creators! But you know what I'm gonna tell you to do!
