Two MAJOR Updates!
After my thoroughly enjoyable interview with Kris, I've been getting frequent updates, and there are two MAJOR items Kris recently shared on Twitter:
Original Content Below!
Who is Kris Hornett?
CBP: Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself and what inspired you to create your own Manga?
KH: My name is Kris Hornett and I’m from Cincinnati Ohio. I’m an avid manga reader and gamer. I collect comics and love to workout. In high school I was an English freak, I loved writing stories. One day my teacher pulled me aside and suggested I seriously consider life as an author. She woke something up in me and for the next decade plus I’ve been writing.
CBP: What was your inspiration for Grey, and building characters and/or worlds in general?
KH: Grey is the series I never knew I wanted to write. Over the years this project had multiple names and directions but as I grew as a writer so did the series. Ultimately the inspiration for Grey is I wanted to make a series that I would want to read. Initially the characters were based on people I knew, but as the story started to take shape I made adjustments. As far as world building, it always starts with an idea, some research and a bunch of maybes!
CBP: What can we come to expect from the journey Grey takes us on?
KH: Plenty of highs and lows. Grey follows the story of Nimbus, a defense unit created by the people of Ketiyama one year after the Sonoma Incident. We pick up with Shuyin Hagamuri (Nimbus member) attending a fashion show that immediately turns into chaos. This starts a chain of events that will turn their world upside down.
CBP: When you announced Grey to the world on March 18th, how much of the work did you have completed and what’s reception been like since then?
KH: So much was already completed as far as the story, character bios and timelines. I wanted to have a pretty good head start before I announced anything. [Reception has] been crazy. People seem genuinely interested in Grey and that makes me happy. I think the profiles and synopsis really give you an idea of how deep the series will be.
How to Enjoy and Support Grey!
CBP: I know you are opening your online shop in May, but can you share with us any information on Publication? Will this be physical, digital? Do you have a publisher? Are you self publishing etc.
KH: Grey will be physical only. I love the feeling of holding a comic book and believe everyone should experience that. As far as publishing goes, yes we are self publishing Grey.
CBP: I’m a total Manga novice. What are some things you think all novice manga readers should know before immersing themselves into a slightly different story form from comics?
KH: A lot less color for sure and Manga are usually read right to left. I think the biggest difference is the sub-genres. In Manga there is literally something for everyone.
CBP: How will Grey appeal to comics fans like myself who may be interested in broadening to Manga?
KH: Grey has the Manga aesthetic while keeping the traditional left to right reading style from traditional comics. I want people to know I truly appreciate all the support I’ve received and we will continue to create something new for everyone to enjoy.
I'd like to thank Kris for taking a few minutes to answer my questions! I'm thoroughly excited to jump back into the artistic stylings of Manga, and I believe Grey might be the right vehicle for me. The story seems both timely and intriguing. The art is very compelling and each image I've seen is amazingly high quality. I also think Kris is doing a great job finding ways to hook people early. If you follow @hornett_ on Twitter, you will find not just new art, but you will find several created profiles, introducing you to the characters who are about to guide you through the world of Ketiyama. I hope to chat again with Kris shortly before Grey publishes, and you better know the moment it arrives at my doorstep after pre-ordering it, I'll review it here!
