The next book up in my continuing coverage of #FreeComicBookDay2020 comes from another small publisher who offered this up online for free:
Red Knight: The Struggle (Manos Publishing)
Red Knight became a superhero at a young age when he was experimented on by the mob, with the hope of creating super soldiers. However, he escaped and donned the costume and the name Red Knight. Its apparent he's not well respected by the folks of Norfolk however for two reasons: 1. He's unlicensed (more on that later) and 2. He looks kind of goofy, you hear a townsperson proclaim "Where did he get that costume, the matrix?" When is all is said and done, however, he has one key relationship that keeps him out of trouble.
You can pick up all three issues of Red Knight and track information on the Kickstarter for issue 4 at: www.manospublishing.com/
I'll say that the #FCBD teaser issue was enough to pique my interest to check out books 1-3, and if I like it enough, I'll be in the Kickstarter Queue when it goes live on May 31st!
Petroleum Spirit Daze
Created by Ben Sears
This was a really intriguing story to me. Aesthetically imagine a world where the Little People, meets the Far Side, meets the Universal Classic monsters. The first thing I'll note is the art. I really like the "Zine" style of Sears' work. From the first panel depicting a truck driving down a highway surrounded by fields, I was hooked. There is something that was perfectly reminiscent of several late night drives in the country I found myself on in either High School or College (both in Kansas). The shading in the drawings, and just simply how the whole thing is rendered is quite lovely.
This was a quick one shot tale that left me wanting more (in a good way) and it felt complete, and while I was surprised at the real ending, everything instantly made sense. If you give this book a read, you should do one of the following:
The journey of a 30-something father of three who's trying to break into the world of reviewing comics after a loooooong hiatus...
Rimmey is a high school history/government teacher & speech and debate coach in Kansas. He has slowly been rediscovering his love for comics since June of 2019.
