Green Lantern Black Stars #1-3 (DC)
By: Grant Morrison, Xermanico, Steve Oliff

Green Lantern has always been one of those characters who intrigues me whenever they show up in something else I'm reading, but I've never sought out any Green Lantern books.  When book #1 was released, Lew talked about it on the Chop Shop podcast, and whenever Lew reviews a book there is a 99% chance I end up picking it up (except for some of the batman spinoffs).

Where this may be a challenge for me, is it is the arc threading season 1 and season 2 together (its a 3 issue mini), with little knowledge of what went down in season one, here we go!

Apparently there is a rising cult/religious order/actual deity devoted to Mu that is conquering planets for Mu to consume? I will say the arena battle on the first planet between the black stars and the scorpion/dragon/beast thing that shoots lasers or fire out of its 4 eyes is dope! However that arena battle is a distraction to see the sheer fire power of the Black Star arsenal.

Book two shows us an earth in Crisis with several members of the Justice League finding their true function or method for bringing peace.  This book is where we find the true root of the conflict, Superboy wants to align himself with the Black Stars and Superman wants him t have nothing to do with it.  Will Superboy be a  pawn in a game larger than his understanding or control?
I do want to give a shout-out to the letterer Steve Wands, this book is interesting trackign the dialogue, but I like the mythical/folklore style chosen as a devise to narrate through some of the underlying lore of this arc.

Book 3 is all-out war, and the first two page spread showing the sheer volume of intense combatants is stunning.  Its also an interesting art-spread as Superman gets thrown into a sarlaak style pit.  The end however to me is weird . Is this all an inter-dimensional trap (I think so), but it almost feels like the way this book ends with the use of the green lantern ring feels like that season of Dallas that ended with Patrick Dempsy in the shower, and it was all a dream...

What should you do? If you are a GL fan, I think this is going to set up an interesting arc for season 2 (which dropped last week, so someone should let me know what you think!).  If not, then this book may serve no purpose to you aside from some stunning art!
