Berserker Unbound 1-4 (Dark Horse)
By: Jeff Lemire, Mike Deodato Jr, Frank Martin, Steve Wands

Jeff Lemire is becoming one of those writers who I find myself picking up anything with his name on it.  I can't tell you what the first book of his I read was, but I have not disliked ANYTHING he has touched. Berserker Unbound is something I picked up when the 4th book came out (Its just a 4-issue run) and it was sitting in my "to be read" box ever since.

In this series you meet a barbarian (called Berskerker) who has lost everything he loved, and is seeking to best the mongrel peoples infected by the mist.  After being injured in battle, he finds his way into a cave, wishing for death, however what he discovers is a room full of runic energy.  He touches a symbol on the wall and is transported to the modern age.  Book 1 ends by him being discovered by a homeless man, who he has a language barrier with, yet the man tends to his wounds, feeds him, and allows him to stay at the camp for the night.  In Books 2 and 3, Berserker believes the man is taking him to meet someone who knows how to use runic energy to transport him back home, yet they end up at a food pantry and liquor store.  In book 3 we realize the fiends who attacked Berserker in the first book have teleported to the modern world to finish killing him, and the battle beautifully ensues in book 4.

I would love to see more of this content, especially given the ending where the homeless man, also acknowledging he has nothing wants to travel with Berserker back to his home time/land.  It seems through their use of buddy, and coming closer in battle has resolved the language barrier, and they are off to find some mead.

What should you do? I'd definitely pick all 4 of these up, it's a fun fantasy tale with the spin of some trappings in the modern world.  This is also the kind of fantasy buddy-story I think I want to see more of.  I hope there is another 4-issue run in the future showing how this pair survives in a new time/place.
