If you've read any of my other previews or reviews, you know that I am a huge fan of Cullen Bunn. I have written about several of his books, talk about them incessantly on youtube. If he ever comes to my LCS.....the level of fanboying will be quite high (or my anxiety will keep me at home!) I'm excited to offer a quick preview of his upcoming book which releases on June 2, 2021.
Basilisk Ch. 1 (Boom! Studios)
We Don't Kill Spiders is available now in an ashcan preview format. The description of the tale has so many intriguing elements to it, that I need it in my life ASAP! As summarized in the press release: "IN THE EARLY VIKING AGE, A FAITHLESS NORSEMAN DETECTIVE IS SUMMONED TO A SCANDINAVIAN HAMLET WHERE A SERIES OF MURDERS HAVE OCCURRED. DISCOVERING THE DARK AND BLOODY HISTORY OF THE VILLAGE HE INVESTIGATES THE LOCAL OUTCAST, A NECROMANTIC WITCH WHO BRINGS HIS ATHEISTIC VALUES INTO QUESTION. DETERMINED TO PREVENT FURTHER HOMICIDES THE TWO BAND TOGETHER TO DISCOVER THE IDENTITY OF A SERIAL KILLER. "
A warrior, a necromancer, a crime tale and more! Again, to eloquently summarize my feelings..."hell yeah!"
"WE DON'T KILL SPIDER IS A VERY PERSONAL PROJECT FOR ME AND IT TOOK ABOUT THREE YEARS TO DEVELOP. IT'S BEEN A FEW YEARS SINCE I HAVE WORKED SOLO ON A BOOK AND I WANTED TO DO ALL THE ARTWORK AND WRITING MYSELF. AT IT’S ROOT “WE DON’T KILL SPIDERS” IS A TRUE CRIME STORY WITH SUPERNATURAL ELEMENTS. THIS TOUCHES ON MY LOVE OF THE NOIRE CRIME DRAMAS, SERIAL KILLER DOCUMENTARIES, NECROMANCERS, AND BATTLE AXES TO THE SKULL."
This also feels like Black Caravan is the perfect home for this project (If you haven't read any Black Caravan, what the hell is wrong with you!). Each Black Caravan title is unique, with its own blend of horror and the occult, and I'm excited to see what sort of new layer this adds to the imprint!
Check out the ashcan, and definitely use my Burrito Bois' discount by using code BURRITO at checkout (maybe one day Scout will love me enough for a code of my own!).
All of these and more are some of the challenges Myers faces in The Down River People.
The Down River People (Archaia/Boom! Studios)
By: Adam Smith, Matthew Fox, Mike Fiorentino
Releases: May 26, 2021
The Down River People tells the story of Myers Carpenter who recently inherited his family's bar after the sudden death of his father. In addition to grieving the loss of his dad, he now has the pressure of figuring out how to keep The Flatbed (a speakeasy) afloat.
After making his first liquor run to resupply the bar, and a run-in with the law (driving through a dry county), we see the development of another evil he has to deal with...anxiety.
Death, the law, and anxiety aren't the only things he has to deal with, when we get a taste of his past.
Witnessing how Myers handled everything going on around him, while still embracing the wisdom of his father was quite beautiful. The way Fox illustrated some of the most intense moments of self discovery via the river was very powerful, and they are images which are burnt into my memory.
The final item of note is how deeply personal this story was to Smith. His one page letter at the conclusion of the story brought me to tears. You can really feel how influential his father was on him, and made me aspire to have the same sort of impact on my children, my students, and the people around me.
Also, I had no idea Adam is from KC, which fills me with hope that I can meet him when cons become a thing again, because when I pick my copy up, I'd love to get it signed!
This story will be easy to fall in love with, and I highly recommend picking it up at your LCS or ordering it, its a decision you won't regret!
